FarBridge online and reporting for duty
Today we let the world know that FarBridge exists. Here’s a note from our founder and CEO, Patrick Curry:
I’m writing to let you know that I’m starting a new company — FarBridge. Like my previous startups, we’re focusing on emerging technologies, this time virtual and augmented reality. The promise of VR is what got me excited about computers many years ago, and today the field of VR, AR, and the blending of the two into mixed reality has me reinvigorated and ready to run the entrepreneurial gauntlet again!
Technology is always shrinking. The large VR goggles of today that let us see make-believe worlds will melt into more inclusive, everyday forms. I imagine the ultimate VR/AR device will combine the features of the Vive, the portability of the HoloLens, and the sleekness of Snap’s Spectacles. These glasses may not yet exist, but we’re getting ready for their arrival with new software experiences.
One of the things I’m most excited about is that VR is not just for video games. Of course, gamers are the early adopters, and we game developers are adept at creating believable 3D virtual worlds. But the biggest wins are just as likely to be in education, medicine, telecommunications, and commerce. I’m excited to explore these new worlds, and hear from more people how VR can help them in their lives and industries.
If you’re thinking this sounds like science fiction, then I’m on the right track. VR/AR isn’t going to happen overnight. Now is a great time to lay a solid foundation, make plans for the future, learn from the things we build, and be surprised along the way. We’ll be making more noise about FarBridge soon — a formal announcement of the company, sharing details of our products, and news around fundraising.
Until then, I’d love to meet up in the real world and tell you more. I’ll be in Las Vegas for DICE and then San Francisco for GDC, and back in Austin for SXSW (and most of the rest of the time). Give a shout if we can get together!
Cheers from Austin,
Patrick
We’re looking forward to sharing more soon! Until then follow us on Medium, Twitter, Facebook, or join our mailing list.
